Maker FAQ – Snowglobe Tumblers

Glitter & Solution

How much glitter should I use?

A good starting point is roughly 1–2 teaspoons of glitter per 100 ml of solution. Add glitter gradually and swirl to check the density – you can always add more. Finer glitters tend to look fuller at lower quantities, while chunky mixes need a little extra to create impact. Browse our Chunky Mix Glitters and Bubble Glitters for inspiration.

My glitter is clumping – how do I fix it?

Clumping is usually caused by static or residual oils on the glitter. Try these steps:

  • Rinse your glitter briefly in distilled water before adding it to the tumbler.
  • Add a tiny drop of washing-up liquid to your solution – this acts as a surfactant and helps separate particles.
  • Avoid mixing glitter types with very different particle sizes in the same fill, as heavier pieces can drag finer ones down.

What solution ratio works best?

Most makers use a mix of distilled water and glycerin or glycerol. A common starting ratio is 70% distilled water to 30% glycerin for a medium-speed float. For a slower, dreamy glitter fall, increase glycerin to 40–50%. Adjust to your preference – there is no single "correct" ratio. Avoid tap water, as minerals can cloud your solution over time.

How do I get rid of bubbles?

Bubbles (degassing) are normal when you first seal a tumbler. Try these approaches:

  • Leave it to settle: Place the sealed tumbler upright and undisturbed for 24–48 hours – many bubbles rise and disappear on their own.
  • Warm water soak: Sit the base of the sealed tumbler in warm (not hot) water for a few minutes to encourage bubbles to release.
  • Overfill slightly: When sealing, overfill with solution so there is minimal air space before you apply the stopper or cap.

Sealing Pre-Drilled Acrylic Blanks

What is the best way to seal a pre-drilled acrylic blank without leaks?

Our Snowglobe Tumbler Blanks come pre-drilled so you can fill and seal them at home. Here is a reliable process:

  1. Clean and dry the area around the hole thoroughly before sealing.
  2. Fill the tumbler with your glitter and solution, leaving the smallest possible air gap.
  3. Insert a silicone stopper or bung sized to your hole. Press firmly to create a snug fit.
  4. Apply a UV resin or an epoxy-compatible sealant around the outside edge of the stopper.
  5. Cure or allow to set fully before handling or tilting the tumbler.
  6. Test over a towel before gifting or selling – give it a good shake and check for seepage.

Can I re-open a sealed blank to change the glitter?

Yes, with care. If you used a silicone stopper without permanent sealant, gently lever it out with a blunt tool. If you cured resin over the stopper, it will be very difficult to remove without risk of cracking the acrylic. We recommend keeping a spare stopper handy while testing your fill before committing to a permanent seal.

Compatibility & Decoration

Can I use UV DTF wraps on acrylic snowglobe blanks?

Yes – UV DTF wraps adhere well to the smooth outer surface of acrylic blanks. Make sure the blank surface is clean and free of fingerprints or dust before applying. Press firmly and smooth from the centre outward to avoid air bubbles. Avoid placing wraps over the seam or stopper area where flex could cause peeling.

Can I sublimate directly onto my snowglobe tumbler blank?

Standard clear acrylic blanks are not suitable for sublimation – the process requires a specially coated surface. If you want a sublimation finish, look for blanks explicitly sold as sublimation-ready. You can then decorate the outer layer and assemble the snowglobe insert separately.

What other decoration methods work on acrylic blanks?

  • UV DTF wraps – peel-and-stick, no heat needed, vibrant finish.
  • Vinyl decals – permanent or removable adhesive vinyl cuts well with most cutting machines.
  • Alcohol ink or resin painting – applied to the outside surface; seal with a compatible top coat.
  • Glitter on the outside – applied with mod podge or a similar adhesive and sealed.

Always test your chosen method on a small area or spare piece before committing to a full design.

Storage

How should I store finished snowglobe tumblers?

  • Store upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight – prolonged UV exposure can fade glitter colours and cloud the solution.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures; heat can warp acrylic and cold can make the solution sluggish.
  • If storing long-term, wrap individually in bubble wrap or tissue to prevent scratching.

Can I store unfilled blanks for a long time?

Yes. Keep unfilled blanks in their packaging or a dust-free bag. Acrylic can scratch easily, so avoid stacking without protection.

Child Safety

Are snowglobe tumblers safe around children?

Finished and fully sealed snowglobe tumblers are intended as decorative or functional drinking vessels for adults. They are not designed as children's toys. Keep in mind:

  • Glitter particles and solution could be harmful if ingested – always ensure tumblers are properly sealed before use.
  • Supervise children around any craft-making process involving small parts, glitter, and liquids.
  • Do not allow young children to handle unsealed blanks or open containers of glitter or glycerin.
  • If a tumbler is intended as a gift for a child, check that it is fully cured, sealed, and leak-tested before gifting.

If you are unsure about a specific material's safety, refer to the manufacturer's guidance for that product.
