Glitter & Solution

How much glitter should I use?

As a general guide, start with around 1–2 teaspoons of glitter per 100 ml of snowglobe solution and adjust to your taste. Fine glitters tend to need less than chunky mixes. Browse our Chunky Mix Glitters and Bubble Glitters to find the right style for your project.

My glitter is clumping — what's wrong?

Clumping is usually caused by one of three things:

  • Static from dry glitter: Wet your glitter with a small drop of washing-up liquid before adding it to the solution.
  • Incompatible solution: Some glitters react with glycerine-heavy mixes. Try a purpose-made snowglobe solution for more consistent results.
  • Overfilling: Too much glitter leaves no room for it to move freely — reduce the amount slightly.

What solution ratio gives the best snowfall effect?

A common starting point is 70–80% distilled water to 20–30% glycerine (or snowglobe solution). More glycerine = slower, heavier fall; less = faster, lighter drift. Always use distilled water to prevent cloudiness over time.

Bubbles & Degassing

How do I get rid of bubbles in my tumbler?

Bubbles are one of the most common frustrations! Try these steps:

  • Fill and seal the tumbler, then leave it upside down on a flat surface for 24–48 hours — bubbles often work their way out naturally.
  • Use a degassing chamber (vacuum chamber) to pull air out of the solution before sealing.
  • Fill as close to the top as possible before sealing to minimise the air pocket.
  • Avoid shaking the tumbler vigorously before the solution has had time to settle.

Will bubbles go away on their own?

Small microbubbles often do disappear within a few days. Larger air pockets are less likely to resolve without intervention — a vacuum chamber is the most reliable fix.

Sealing Pre-Drilled Blanks

How do I seal a pre-drilled acrylic blank without leaks?

Our Snowglobe Tumbler Blanks come pre-drilled for easy filling. To seal without leaks:

  1. Fill your tumbler with solution and glitter, leaving minimal air space.
  2. Insert the plug or stopper supplied with your blank.
  3. Apply a waterproof sealant (e.g. E6000, silicone aquarium sealant, or UV resin) around the plug opening on the outside.
  4. Allow to cure fully per the sealant's instructions — typically 24 hours minimum — before tilting or handling.
  5. Test over a towel before gifting or selling.

Can I re-open a sealed tumbler later?

This depends on how it was sealed. UV resin and E6000 form a permanent bond — re-opening risks cracking the acrylic. If you think you may need to top up later, use a removable silicone sealant initially and apply a permanent layer once you're happy with the fill.

Decoration & Compatibility

Can I use UV DTF wraps on acrylic snowglobe blanks?

Yes — UV DTF wraps adhere well to the smooth outer surface of acrylic blanks. Make sure the surface is clean and free from oils or residue before applying. Avoid overlapping the wrap over the sealed plug area to keep the seal intact.

What decoration methods work on sublimation tumblers vs acrylic blanks?

  • Acrylic blanks: UV DTF wraps, vinyl, epoxy, glitter dip, alcohol ink, and resin work well. Sublimation does not work on standard acrylic.
  • Sublimation tumblers: Sublimation printing works on the coated outer surface. UV DTF wraps can also be applied over a sublimated design as an accent. Avoid sharp vinyl on curved surfaces as edges may lift.

Can I use glitter on the outside of the tumbler as well as inside?

Absolutely — many makers apply an epoxy or resin glitter coat to the exterior for extra sparkle. Just ensure any external coatings are fully cured before handling the sealed tumbler, and that they don't interfere with the plug or seal.

Storage

How should I store finished snowglobe tumblers?

  • Store upright or upside down — avoid storing on their side for long periods, as this can stress the seal.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, which can cause solution expansion and potential leaks.
  • Store in a cool, stable-temperature environment for the longest lifespan.

How long do snowglobe tumblers last?

A properly sealed tumbler with quality solution can last for years. Using distilled water and minimising air inside the tumbler are the biggest factors in longevity. Cloudiness over time is usually caused by tap water minerals or solution degradation.

Safe Use

Are snowglobe tumblers safe around children?

Finished, properly sealed snowglobe tumblers are intended as decorative items or drinks vessels for adults. They are not suitable as toys for young children. Keep unsealed tumblers, loose glitter, sealants, and solutions out of reach of children during the making process. Always follow the safety guidelines on any adhesives, resins, or sealants you use.

Are the glitters safe to use?

Our glitters are sold for craft use. Always work in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling glitter dust. Check individual product listings for any specific handling notes. Keep glitter away from eyes and out of reach of young children.
